Stephen F. Austin State University, or SFA for short, is a public university located in Nacogdoches, which is the county seat of Nacogdoches County, situated in the US state of Texas, with a population estimated at a number of more than 30 000 inhabitants, during the 2007 census. Nacogdoches is best known for the fact that it is home of Stephen F. Austin State University and of the Association for Business Communication.
SFA was founded in 1923, as a teachers' college, being named after one of Texas' founding fathers, Stephen F. Austin. It is one of 4 "independent" public universities in the state and it offers its students educational programs in more than 120 areas of study, including 3 doctoral programs, nearly 60 graduate degrees and over 80 undergraduate majors.
SFA's athletic teams are known as the Lumberjacks (men) and Ladyjacks (women), who compete in NCAA Division I, in numerous sports, including in basketball, baseball, golf, volleyball, softball and tennis. One their most notable achievements has been experienced in men's basketball, in which they reached their first NCAA tournament in 2009 after winning the Southland Conference regular season and tournament. The Lumberjacks also compete in football, in which they participate in NCAA Division I (Football Championship Subdivision-formerly I-AA-for football) in the Southland Conference. Their distinctive colors are purple and white.
Among the most resonant names, on the list of notable alumni, there are: Will Jennings - Grammy, Golden Globe and Academy Award-winning songwriter, member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Joseph W. Kennedy, Co-Discoverer of Plutonium, Brad Maule - Daytime Emmy Award winning actor, Stephen Payne - International Relations and Energy Expert, and Shane Carruth - filmmaker, writer/director/producer/star of Primer (film), among several others.
It is considered to be "bad luck" for an undergraduate student at SFU to walk through the Old Stone Fort, the saying being that whoever walks through it he/she will not graduate.
